E-commerce Website Development in Egypt and the Gulf
Updated
E-commerce website development is planning, designing and building an online store: the catalogue, cart, checkout, payments, shipping and the admin your team uses every day. Xtnd builds online stores on Shopify, WooCommerce or custom Laravel from Nasr City, Cairo, for merchants in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the wider Gulf.
Which platform should your online store use?
Pick the platform that fits how you sell, not the one an agency prefers. Shopify suits merchants who want hosting and security handled. WooCommerce suits those who want to own the code and already use WordPress. A custom Laravel build suits stores whose rules do not fit either platform. We build on all three.
| Shopify | WooCommerce | Custom Laravel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Handled by Shopify | Your own hosting | Your own hosting |
| Running costs | Monthly plan, plus app and payment fees | Hosting, plugins and maintenance | Hosting and maintenance |
| Code and data ownership | Your data, Shopify’s platform | Yours | Yours |
| Custom checkout logic | Through apps and Shopify Functions, within Shopify’s limits | Broad, through plugins and code | Anything you design |
| Arabic (RTL) | Supported, depends on theme | Supported, depends on theme | Designed in from the start |
| Cash on delivery | Built in | Built in | Built as needed |
| Time to first launch | Shortest | Short to medium | Longest |
| Who updates it | Shopify updates the platform | You or your developer | You or your developer |
| Best for | Fast launch, low upkeep | Control, content plus store | Unusual rules, marketplaces, portals |
Each platform has its own page: Shopify apps and stores, WordPress and WooCommerce and custom Laravel platforms. What makes selling online in Egypt and the Gulf different?
Customers in Egypt and much of the Gulf still pay cash on delivery for many orders, often shop on their phones, and often reach stores on WhatsApp. Stores also need Arabic that reads naturally, local shipping zones and payment gateways that work in the market. A store built for elsewhere often misses these.
What we plan for from the start:
- Cash on delivery with order confirmation, so fewer fake or forgotten orders get shipped.
- Mobile-first design, because many shoppers browse on their phones.
- Arabic and English with proper right-to-left layouts.
- Local shipping, with zones down to governorate or city level.
- Payment gateways that serve your market, checked before we commit.
- WhatsApp for order updates and support where it helps.
What has Xtnd built for e-commerce?
We built online stores for Elecadi and Souq Cairo on WordPress and WooCommerce. We also built Cartsaver, our own Shopify app with the Built for Shopify badge, made to stop fake cash on delivery orders through the official WhatsApp API. That gives us both sides: building stores and building the tools stores run on.
- Elecadi: e-commerce website, WordPress and WooCommerce.
- Souq Cairo: e-commerce website, WordPress and WooCommerce.
- Cartsaver: our Shopify app for WhatsApp order confirmation, on the Shopify App Store.
How does an e-commerce project work?
The project starts with how you sell and ship, then picks the platform, designs the key pages, builds and fills the store on staging, and tests real orders before launch. You approve each stage. Launch happens only after those test orders go through.
- Discovery. Products, customers, payments, shipping, languages and existing systems.
- Platform choice. Shopify, WooCommerce or Laravel, with the reasons in writing.
- Design. Home, category, product, cart and checkout, on mobile first. See UI/UX design.
- Build on staging. Theme or custom code, store setup and integrations.
- Products and content. Entered or imported, in Arabic and English.
- Testing. Test orders for every payment and shipping option, on real phones.
- Launch. Domain, analytics, search basics and redirects from any old store. See SEO services.
Example: a Cairo brand moving from Instagram orders to its own store
This is an illustrative scenario, not a client project. A clothing brand in Cairo sells through Instagram and WhatsApp messages. Orders are written down by hand, sizes get mixed up, and many cash on delivery orders are refused at the door.
A practical first store could be:
- A Shopify store, because the team wants a fast launch and no server to manage.
- Products with size and colour variants, so stock is tracked per item.
- Shipping zones by governorate with the courier’s prices.
- Cash on delivery plus card payment through a local gateway.
- WhatsApp confirmation for COD orders before they are packed.
- Arabic as the main language, with English as a second.
If the brand later needs features Shopify does not offer, a small custom app can add them without moving platform.
What affects the cost of an e-commerce website?
The platform, the design route, the number of products and variants, payment and shipping integrations, languages, custom features and any migration all affect cost. Running costs differ too: Shopify charges a monthly plan, while WooCommerce and Laravel need hosting and upkeep. We send a quote once the scope is clear.

Frequently asked questions
Which e-commerce platform is best for a store in Egypt?
There is no single best platform. Shopify suits merchants who want a hosted store with little technical upkeep. WooCommerce suits merchants who want to own the code and data. A custom Laravel build suits stores with unusual rules. We recommend one after hearing how you sell and ship.
Can my store take cash on delivery?
Yes. Shopify and WooCommerce both support cash on delivery, and a custom build can too. Because unconfirmed COD orders are common in the region, we can add order confirmation on WhatsApp. On Shopify, our own app Cartsaver is built for exactly this.
Can the store be in Arabic and English?
Yes. We build stores in Arabic, English or both. The Arabic version is designed for right-to-left reading, with its own URLs, product content and search titles, so it can rank and convert on its own rather than being a mirrored copy.
Can a store move from one platform to another?
Yes. Products, customers and often order history can be moved, and old URLs should redirect to the new ones so search rankings carry over. The redirects and checkout need testing before the domain is switched.
How much does an e-commerce website cost?
It depends on the platform, the design (theme or custom), the number of products, payment and shipping integrations, languages, custom features and any data to move. Running costs also differ: Shopify has a monthly plan, while WooCommerce and Laravel need hosting and upkeep. We send a quote once the scope is clear.
Why should a store be designed for mobile first?
Many shoppers in Egypt and the Gulf browse and buy on their phones. Designing the product page, cart and checkout for a small screen first keeps them short and easy to complete, and the layout then scales up to desktop.
